If power pop maestro Herb Eimerman spent his career recording and releasing indie pop songs that edged into people’s consciousness with his Australian label Egomaniac Records head Joe Algeri, his grandson, fourteen year old Gavin Eimerman, has a sound that comes across as less precocious and more soulful than his peer’s sadboys and bedroom pop stuff, like Herb’s best songs it is filled with musical moments that color and shade the open ended lyricism.

Last October, Gavin released his third single (here) and the follow up is less teen angst and more super intelligent existential dread that is at the very least apt:

Maybe the end is just a train
And pray it’s going somewhere
Going anywhere but nowhere

a sort of blueprint for questions that invade us in the dead of night, or at least the earliest of mornings waiting for the birds to sing, Gavin’s restless mind won’t settle down. The sound is Americana folk with a pop arrangement as heralded with a mandolin solo and Bianca Algeri’s lovely background ahhhs and place setting drums. Gavin has a voice of distilled, disquiet, half formed sorrow, and the world about him seems observed from an immediate past to an upcoming pop-future, but it sounds as though he is tussling with the melody line which Bianca holds for him.

The effect of having a world around Gavin to stand behind him gives the guy a sense of professionalism, his songs are fully formed as opposed to free form poetry and his sound is one that sinks into thought brought to music as what becomes slowly clear: it is a break up song that compares the end of a romance to the end of life. The kids are all right. Fourteen-year-old vocalist-guitarist Gavin Eimerman has recorded a new single titled “Déjà Vu” with help from 16-year-old Bianca Algeri on drums and backing vocals. Eimerman lives in the Chicago area while Algeri resides in Australia. There’s an additional sense of déjà vu here since Gavin’s grandfather Herb Eimerman and Bianca’s father Joe Algeri have recorded music together as part of the international power pop act The Britannicas and on several other projects.
