about

I finally got myself a proper (Rode) microphone but I clearly had no idea how to use it.

Danny, Lars and Stefan emailed me their overdubs. I thought wow, anything is now possible.

Lars has already recorded the intro as a separate instrumental piece and when I heard it I said yep that's going on the beginning of my song and we came up with his voice-over together.

I also remember when he overdubbed the strings for the main part of the song he asked why I hadn't recorded to a tempo grid. "What the fuck is that?" I thought.

Danny emailed me his vocal harmony (via dial-up) all the way from Australia and he became the first international contributor to a recording.

Stefan recorded the outro alone as a separate piece and I also spliced that on at the end.

Based on a true story, supposedly.

Released in 2002.

lyrics

______________________________________________

It was a long time ago
And it almost seems funny when I remember it now
But I was just a kid and that day killed Christmas for me
The day I saw Santa with a gun

Mummy I want a drink and some chocolate
Can we go into 711
I promise to be good for the rest of the day
Oh yippie I see Santa coming in
Oh mum can I go and talk to him

Santa starts to scream that he wants
Some cigarettes and all of the money
Then I see that Santa's got a gun
This is scaring me to death
Santa shouldn't be like that

I saw Santa wIth a gun
I'm never ask him for anything ever again
I saw Santa with a gun
I hope he never comes around to our house

T'was the night before Christmas
Now I'm scared again
Oh mummy can I sleep with you and dad
I don't want him to come again
I hope that Christmas never comes again

I saw Santa wIth a gun
I'm never ask him for anything ever again
I saw Santa with a gun
I never want to see him again
