about

Whirly Bird is the perfect blueprint for Jack & the Beanstalk – loser guy-can-never-get-girl lyrics set against old school rock n' roll fused with a bit of soul and a bit of boogie.

Written as a dedication to the Pagoda Ballroom, a long-gone dance venue in Perth from the mid-20th century. Like most other dance halls of the time, the Pagoda was unlicensed although sly grog could be found. Five gallon kegs would be brought by attendees and the taps were passed through a window. The Pagoda even hired out the jugs.

lyrics

Hey you won't you come along with me
The future's so bright that I can't see
How this could be any other way.

All week long I've been thinking of you
Press my shirt, spit and polish my shoes
It's Friday night, let's have a drink or two or more.

Are you ready for dancin' and romancin'?
Come on baby won't you take a chance with me?
And it's the sweetest thing I've heard
Won't you be, won't you be my whirly bird.

I hate this job but I need the bread
When I see you I'm gonna lose my head
I'm gonna clean out these pockets and you can fix the hole in my heart.

The minutes feel like days
Until I see you walk my way
Tick tock tick tock my heart goes stop.

_______________________________________________

Written by Joe Algeri; commenced 20 June 2000 and completed 20 April 2012.

Because the band is too lazy to rehearse, the members recorded their parts individually onto Pro-Fools in what’s left over in a room at Joe’s house (which is otherwise filled with Joe’s wife’s crap). Except for the bass which was recorded at Matt De La Hunty's studio. Otherwise recorded when the Joe’s kids were out of the house in April 2012.

Technical specs: Kev consumed 1 litre of 9% beer and a quarter of scotch to do one guitar track and 2 backing vocals.
